Introduction to Cell Signalling

Background

When we listen the phrase cell signaling. If we are not in some specific class, then it may be about mobile signaling or may be related to life science about cells communications? Let see what is mobile signaling. Mobile signal connects one user (mobile user) to another user across the network. These towers transmit sound in form of radio waves between both users and devices and towers used by the users are continuously convert these radio waves into understandable and meaningful sound of that language, that both mobile users are using for their telephonic conversation.

Similarly, cells signaling is a broad term used to describe communication of a cell with other cells or its environments. This topic is related to cell signaling related to life science instead of mobile networking signaling.

If you, me know about basic cell biology, then in this stage our mind must be triggered by such types of questions?

  1. What is cell signaling?
  2. How cell signaling work?
  3. Cells communicate by one type of signaling or using different types of signaling?
  4. Why cell use signaling process? Or what is the importance of cell signaling?

To answer properly such types of questions, follow up my cell signalling contents.

Limitation or boundaries of cell signaling

Keep in mind that these signals mostly take place between the cells of a single organism, but it can sometimes occur between organisms of different species.

Cells use many ways for communications.

  • Some take place within a single cell, regardless of outer cells.
  • Intercellular communication can take place through simultaneous signal transmission, in which two cells in direct contact exchange signals.
  • Paracrine signaling, through which cells communicate over relatively short cellular distances.
  • Endocrine signaling, through which relatively distant cells communicate. Cells communicate with non-neighboring cells by releasing signaling elements into the nearby cellular environment or into the blood. Signals released into the blood are called hormones and can cause significant changes in distant cells.

For detail study of different types of cell communication, read our following post, “Types of Cell Signalling

Brief Introduction of the Importance of Cell signaling

Cell signaling is a generic term that refers to various simple or complex processes by which cell either control, or created, or maintained, or terminated many cellular activities. Cellular activities like cell division, cell movement, cell excretion, cellular transport, biosynthesis of certain molecules such as protein synthesis etc.  A significant part of the genome of an organism, is consisting of protein coding regions that generally codes for proteins that are involved in many cellular processes including signaling processes. Cell signal transmission plays important roles from the development of an organism to the reaction to various stimuli that organism receives from its inside of the body as well as outside of the body. Therefore defects in any single signaling path in many organisms can cause different types of abnormalities including developmental problems that may lead to even child mortality in case of human being.

Component of Cell Signalling

  1. Simple signaling Pathway: The generation and proliferation of cell signals must be tightly regulated, so that signal pathways are seldom as simple as “Cellular signal A causes effect B.”
  2. In addition, many signaling processes overlap significantly and many different signaling components may be required to produce an effect. Cell signaling processes are thus typically organized into “signaling paths” which describe the many different signaling and regulation components that exist between the initial signal (s) and the final effect (s).

Influence of Cell Signaling Pathways

Cell signaling work in specific manner. In case of any differences in cell signaling pathways can affect alter the rate of response, effectiveness, as well as accuracy of the signal. This is important because sometimes a stimulus or signal needs to produce a strong effect very quickly, while in other cases it is more important that a stimulus produce a response that is commensurate with the strength of the signal.

How to Investigate Cell Signalling?

There are several different methods that researchers use to study cell signaling. Traditional methods generally focus on identifying and describing specific parts of a cell signaling pathway.

  1. One possible approach is to prevent the expression of a gene suspected of being involved in a signaling pathway and observe the effects.
  2. Another approach to studying cell signaling pathways involves a biological approach known as systems biology. In systems biology, broad, branched signal paths are analyzed, their emergent properties are noted and the effects of small changes in the entire system are analyzed.

  1. This is the perfect webpage for everyone who wishes to understand this topic. You realize so much its almost hard to argue with you (not that I personally would want toÖHaHa). You definitely put a brand new spin on a subject that has been written about for a long time. Great stuff, just great!
